Present Tense: 15th Annual Photographic Competition Exhibition
Photographic Center Northwest
900 12th Avenue
Seattle, WA 98122

Featuring: Adam Satushek, Alex Leme, Carl Wooley, Chikara Umihara, Chris Letcher, Ellen Rennard, Erin Nicole Johnson, Heather M. O'Brien, Kireilyn Barber, Landon Nordeman, Mark Daughhetee, Matthew Besinger, Michael ten Pas, Sari Wynne, Steven Beckly, Tony Chirinos, Virginia Wilcox, Yoko Ikeda

The exhibition title, Present Tense, refers to state of the medium today. In recent times, we have heard intense debate about the direction of photography: questions about the future of the medium, the threat of potential extinction of the physical book, cynical commentaries that originality is a thing of the past. Denise Wolff selected projects to counter these concerns. Ms. Wolff is a photo book editor, known for her work with both contemporary and historic photography. Prior to joining Aperture last year, she worked at Phaidon Press. Throughout her career, she has had the opportunity to work on many beautiful books with some of the world's top photographers, including Mary Ellen Mark, Martin Parr, Eugene Richards, and Stephen Shore to name a few.

The exhibition runs from August 6 - September 17, 2010. The artists reception & awards ceremony will be held at PCNW on Friday August 13th, 8:30 - 10:00 pm, following the lecture with Denise Wolff, "Why Photo Books Matter" at the Seattle Art Museum.

TOAE is the largest juried outdoor art exhibition in Canada that offers a fresh-air alternative to conventional art shows and galleries. More than 400 artists participate and an estimated 100,000 visitors attend the exhibition every year. Participating artists will exhibit in 14 different categories including ceramics, digital media, drawing, fibre, glass, jewellery, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolour and wood.

TOAE is a charitable non-profit organization supported by a group of volunteers active in the art and corporate communities. No percentage of the artists' sales is taken by the organizers. TOAE gratefully acknowledges the support of its many sponsors and award donors.

Newspace Center for Photography
1632 SE 10th Ave
Portland, OR 97214

6th Annual Juried Exhibition
July 2 - August 1, 2010
Opening reception: July 2, 6-9 pm

Steven Beckly, Alexander Harding, Dave Jordano, Jordanna Kalman, Andrea Land, Anna Landa, Rania Matar, Meredith Miller, Karen Miranda Rivadeneira, Donna J. Wan, Charles Rozier.

Newspace Center for Photography is pleased to present its 6th Annual Juried Exhibition. This year's exhibition was curated by Darren Ching, owner of Klompching Gallery in New York City. From close to 300 entries and approximately 1,500 individual images, Mr. Ching selected these 11 photographers.

Jurors' Statement:

The challenge with curating the Newspace Center of Photography's 6th Annual Juried Exhibition, was not having a preconceived concept for the show and to allow the theme itself to emerge from the strongest photographs submitted.

Despite the comprehensive range of visual strategies employed, what materialized from the 1,500+ images submitted, appeared to be a pre-occupation with the way in which surroundings define-even embody-the notion of refuge. This notion of shelter, of sanctuary, became the curatorial concept by which final selections were made. What results is an exhibition from eleven photographers that could be seen to be emblematic of contemporary photography, exploring subjects such as vulnerability, nostalgia, intimacy and privacy.

The exhibition takes place from Friday, July 2nd through Sunday, August 1st. Please join us at the opening reception on Friday, July 2nd from 6-9 pm.

Opening: May 6, 6-10 pm

1214 Queen St W
Toronto, M6J 1J6
Daily 12 - 5pm

Steven Beckly, Genevieve Blais, Colin Carney, Geneviève Caron, Tiffany Doldron, Sheryl Dudley, Aaron Vincent Elkaim, Sarah Febbraro, Derek Flack, Joe Fleming, Ruth Gillson, Brett Gundlock, Sophie Hogan, Katia Houde, Courtney Kelsey, Nicole Koster, Lindsay Lauckner, Esmond Lee, Miklos Legrady, Ben Ng, Gil Reynolds, Walter Segers, Natalia Sokolovska, Barry Stoch, William Suarez, Daniela Tersigni, Genevieve Thauvette, Shelley Wildeman

Exposed: Pervasive Influence seeks to examine the tyranny of the photograph. How does an image colonize perception? How are false realities created through different photo genres? This group show illuminates layers of perception by unmasking cultural appropriation, interrupting the fashion photographer's narrative, decoding the anthropomorphization of animals through fantasy portraiture, and by confronting us with the effects of omnipresent advertising on our bodies; each work reveals new possibilities for reading images.

This exhibition is co-produced by the Gladstone Hotel and SpeakEasy and curated by Christina Zeidler and David Brown.

Unless You Will is an online journal that showcases a vision within photo-based art.

Issue 5 features the works of five artists: Darren Rigo's "Displacement," Fabio Severo's "Portraits," Justin Walker's "Father's Mine," Rodolfo Vanmarcke's "Modern Solitudes," and Steven Beckly's "Little Wolf."

Note from editor, Heidi Romano: At the heart of this journal you'll find five artists who use photography as an art that transforms their world into stills, touching upon telling stories that strive for new visions. Often I imagine them to work in complete silence, their eyes trained intensely on refinement. These images are a little love affair which seduce and hypnotise - they are a source of inspiration, perfectly balanced and reduced to their most basic essence.

Zachary Ayotte

Quinnford+Scout

The Artery
9535 Jasper Avenue
Edmonton, AB

At the Same Time is the work of three couples who use photography to explore the nature of their relationships. Colin Quinn and Oisin Share (aka Quinnford & Scout), Steven Beckly (with partner, Dylan MacNeil), and Ted Kerr and Zachary Ayotte have been working independently on documenting and uncovering their intimate personal and sexual relationships with their partners. Geographically separated, the artists developed their series independently but simultaneously. As the title suggests, the collection of these works reveals a common stream of consciousness, a simultaneous creation.

Each exhibition of the collected works will be curated by the artists in their hometowns (Zachary Ayotte and Ted Kerr in Edmonton, AB, Steven Beckly and Dylan MacNeil in Toronto, ON, and Colin Quinn and Oisin Share in Manchester, UK). The exhibitions will be documented throughout their three locations. This is the first of the three exhibitions.
